GM's Tip of the Week

Let’s talk about recruiting. For those of us lucky enough to have steady groups, this isn’t really an issue; but I have found that it is a good thing to keep in mind regardless; you never know when you might find yourself looking for new players.

So, on Rondak’s Portal, recruiting takes a few forms. A forum post can be made to gauge interest by either GM or player. For a GM looking specifically to advertise a game, be it new, active or starting over, they can ping one of the CoT and ask to run an ad in the Oracle. They can also run ads in various forms on other forums; with permission from the local moderators, of course. This will probably be true in some form for any virtual game, with the site names being the only real difference.

Be aware of time zones, if you want to play in real time; those will dictate a lot of your scheduling. Anyone who’s scheduled events in an MMO will know exactly what I mean.

Recruiting for a live game is a different kettle of fish, although one can use a lot of the same tools. A group can advertise on Facebook, local billboards (either public, or at the local gaming store) or on sites like Meetup or Pen and Paper Games. If you happen to be lucky enough to have someone who is good at designing ads, by all means ask them for help, but be prepared to be asked for compensation; a good ad designer doesn’t work for free!

Remember, you might not get good bites for a while, and you might not keep the ones you do get. Don’t be discouraged; these things take time.

Good luck! And happy gaming. ^_^
