GM's Tip of the Week

One thing I hear a lot is that GMing is like herding cats. Not going to say it can’t be, but there are reasons I keep stressing communication and one of them is that it will make your life easier down the line, and result in much, much, much less cat-herding.
Before you even start planning, ask your players what they want to do. If you get a lot of ‘uh, I dunno’, have some examples. Dungeon crawling? City shenanigans? Lord of the Rings-style Grand Quests?  Ask them what kinds of themes they want included. High Drama? Politics – doesn’t have to be Game of Thrones – or … well, there are a lot of possible themes that you can apply to a given setting.
But ask. Talk to your players. Find out what they want to do, it may be less like herding cats and more like pulling teeth, but it should be worth the effort you put in.
