Month: November 2017 (Page 1 of 2)

Kickstarters of Note

Hello, fellow Portalites! I have a new collection of shiny for you to look over, some new games, new terrain, some gorgeous miniatures – and a setting teaser to go with them – and some more goodies on Aventuria, the setting that goes with The Dark Eye.
Onward; beneath the cut!

General Site News

Hey, fellow Portalites!
I’d like to take a moment to remind everybody that submissions to the Oracle are always welcome; any of the things you see posted are open for submissions, and we’re certainly interested in any suggestions you guys might have for other content.
Also, we’re happy to post ads for games, either looking for players, or players
looking for a game; in addition to any forum threads people might have started.
Anyone who wants to start a game and isn’t quite sure how to do it should probably check out our Guide to World Building on the Portal for starting a game, following the guide lines means a game gets approved fast.
The new code writing is proceeding apace; which is to say that Andi is writing it as fast as he can, when he can.
We’re still looking for a new co-lo home for the Portal. I’m sure we’re not the only ones tired of irregular outages by way of a flaky Internet provider. Finding a home for the Portal that isn’t going to require us to make some unpleasant changes is proving difficult, given our needs and Andi’s high standards, but we are looking.
As always, if you guys want to help, and have the spare pennies, our Patreon is wide open, and the help is always appreciated, even if all you can spare is a couple of bucks here or there. If you’d rather run a one-time donation, I am looking into a Paypal-direct link, and have put up a Ko-Fi button, for those using Ko-Fi who’d like to help.

Question of Sevens

By now, you’ve either run out of leftovers or are thoroughly sick of whatever it was you feasted on over the holiday.
However, if not… what did you have, and what sorts of things are you doing with the grisly remains?

Question of Sevens

The hunt is on! The success of your holiday feast depends solely on your prowess as a hunter; what sort of beastie are you challenging for life and limb, and what is your chosen weapon?
(remember, it has to be edible at the end of the hunt; a clean kill is best, and no disintegrations!)

Wudinar’s Adventuring Tips

Never underestimate the power of a well-placed spell. I have argued here in the past that unnecessary, frivolous or gratuitous use of magic can leave one without spells when one needs them most, but at the same time, the right spell at the right time can turn a situation from extremely challenging to mildly inconvenient.

GM’s Tip of the Week

I’m going to take a closer look at character classes for a few weeks, and I decided to start with paladins. Buckle up, folks, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride…
Not many classes provoke as much party-based drama and strife as the badly-played paladin, and very few people can play paladins without getting embroiled into Alignment or Code of Honour based arguments, either with you or the rest of the group.

Kickstarters of Note

Hey, fellow Portalites!
The holidays are coming up …. like winter, the holidays are coming. Kickstarter might not be an ideal way to do one’s holiday shopping, but some of us do like to plan ahead for coming years. I found you some nifty game-related toys, and even a comic printing to dead-tree for you, or the science-fiction lover in your life. Take a look. Remember, I post what catches my eye; so if something’s caught your eye, and you think others might need to know, post a link in the comments, or start a thread in the forums!
And now, onward, to the Kickstarters I have found!

Question of Sevens

Every year, the traditional settings grace the table, and every piece has its own history, its own story. Candelabra, centerpiece; what are they? Where did they come from?

Wudinar’s Adventuring Tips

Sometimes, the best plan is to not have a plan or ad-lib things. Sometimes, that is the only plan. In those circumstances, though, it is advisable to practice restraint and limit the degree of surprise to one’s friends and allies…

Question of Sevens

Another month, another set of questions! The Query of Sevens is intended as a sort of prompt; for a GM, it can be used to create plot. For a player, back story – and perhaps, a bit of plot.

The Query of Sevens is also just a fun little game for us to play in between more serious posts; silly questions with silly answers.

In the lead up to Feast Day, Day of Thanksgiving – whatever you call it – I ask you, what is the best dish on the table? Why? Where did it come from?
